Who Decides Who Drives Each Day? The members themselves decide. See below for details about how this works. Members arriving at the flexible carpooling park at the beginning of the work day can decide right up until they are in the driving lane or the parking lane, to be a rider or a driver, and they can even change their minds after that. Of course, for the system to work there needs to be enough riders and enough drivers, so the membership approval process seeks two people who would prefer to be riders for each person who wants to be a driver. Members who don't get charged a daily amount for parking (at their work) tend to prefer driving, while those who can avoid a daily charge tend to prefer riding. On arriving at the flexible carpooling park, each member can see what other members are doing that day. If the member is in a hurry, the best choice is to do the opposite of what most others are doing: - if many people are waiting for a ride, the fastest choice is to be a driver - if several cars are waiting for riders, the fastest choice is to be a rider As soon as the route is operating a pattern gets established, and members learn the times that riders tend to wait, and the times that drivers tend to wait. The system ebbs and flows, but no-one waits very long. The waiting times are shown on the website to help members to plan their travel times. Now on to learn how the ride credit system rewards drivers, but only at a price that riders agree with. |
